Active Mindset vs Passive Mindset
December 20, 2007 8:04 pm MotivationFrom the “mindset” perspective, we can be part of one of two categories: passive mindset people and active mindset people.
Passive mindset means that, in general, when faced with an issue, people tend to complain, become frustrated and stressed out. In the same circumstances, people with active mindset think OK that hurt. How can I improve it or what can I do to avoid it in the future?.
The majority of people I know (about, say, 95%) are stuck in the passive mindset.
Think of the thing that bothers you mostly right now. If you don’t know what it is, take a minute or two to find it and then keep reading.
Are you doing anything to change it, or are you just going with the flow? Passive mindset is just going with the flow because you think that nothing can be done or it’s so complicated that it’s not worth the trouble. Active minded people know there’s always something to do, and all it takes is going through the trouble of allocating some time to identify the right thing to do, and then taking the steps to actually get there.
Changing the mindset is, honestly, one of the most difficult tasks that you can undertake. It requires a lot of self analysis, perseverance and poise to accomplish. But the good part is that, as always, there are plenty of opportunities to practice. Every time something bothers you, remember to have the right attitude and to try to find ways to improve it. You can start with smaller things then take on the big issues. After a few weeks or months, nothing will bother you much any more, because you know that you can change it if you want to. You’ll start to see things differently, and you’ll be shocked by the passive attitude of your friends.
Let’s take a very common problem as an example: money. It never seems to be enough. We could always use some extra. It would be really nice if we had a couple of million dollars and never had to wait for paychecks. Well, are you doing anything to get there? Or are you thinking how could I ever earn that kind of money, it’s just impossible… I have to agree, it is impossible. But only if you think so. As Henry Ford said, whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right. Read a few articles on the subject and you’ll start seeing patterns. You’ll start to understand that motivation and determination are more important than intelligence and management skills. How much time do you allocate daily to becoming a millionaire? Would you believe me if I told you that 10 minutes a day is enough for starters?
Another example: you just missed the bus connection to work because the train was late, and the next bus is in 20 minutes. Passive mindset would be to start complaining, get into a bad mood, blame the public transport company for such poor service. Active mindset would be seeing an opportunity to clear your mind and meditate for 20 minutes, or carry a book in your backpack from now on - or other things that turn the bad experience into a positive one.
Within every adversity is the seed of an equal or greater benefit. (Napolen Hill).
Start small, and apply this to all areas of your life. Ask yourself how can you improve your relationship, your health, your job, how can you eliminate stress, how can you live the life you’ve always wanted. Take things one at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed.
As your mindset changes to active, you gain more peace of mind and learn to accept things more easily. Active mindset is just a different way of looking at the same things.
